| History In parts of the world parents tell their children tales of a world long lost; a place of spirits and powerful humans and wars beyond imagining. Long ago, or so they say, humanity had the ability to control the very elements of the world, a power they used to wage wars and prevent the progress of technology. This was a world of hardship and strife, every generation lived painful lives of suffering and want, there was never enough food or clean water or supplies to keep the masses healthy and happy. A world of fear and superstition. One day, the leader of these people, a human known simply as the Avatar, was challenged by a good man, an honorable man, whom wished to bring down the tyranny and suppression lead by the powerful Benders, the humans with the abilities to control the elements; with the hope that the rest of humanity would rise up and create a new Utopian society free of the religious oppression and forced scarcity that powered the old world. The original leader was defeated by the Avatar, however his followers where not detoured; and after several generations of working from the shadows and gathering more toward their cause, they where able to drive the benders from this world, and usher in an age of peace and prosperity for all. In other parts of the world, the tale is somewhat different. The Equalists were a terrorist group that sought to control and use the benders for their own twisted plot; making the everyday citizens of the world that had been born with their bending abilities into monsters and then robbing them of their gifts so that no one would be able to stop their campaign for control of the world. Their leader was eventually defeated, this much the stories agree upon; however in this version, the remaining believers never went to ground. For generations they worked in tandem with the rest of society to create a new, better world; where all humanity could live in peace and happiness. It wasn't until a new, radical leader appeared in their ranks that they moved against the dwindling populations of bender; driving them into the shadows for fear of being killed otherwise. Because of this, normal humans rejected the ancient ways that had been practiced for thousands upon thousands of years and turned to technology to guide and rule their lives. While they now had plenty and all they could want physically; they began to rot and degrade spiritually, leaving them to live empty, cold lives of listless wanting, filled only by the drive to replace what they had lost and doing so by pushing the boundaries of science and technology ever farther; the costs to human live and the planet be damned. The truth of history has been lost to humanity as large; however the effects of this tale resound through the world. Humanity at large lives as they did far in the ancient past; before the time of the Avatar and human dominion of the world; driven to cluster in large cities for protection not from the spirits, but from a world they no long understand and have little connection with. They turn inward, focused only on their own glory or their own needs, never turning an eye to the outside world. Within these new wilds, the last population of humanity that clings to the old ways and remembered the past as it was, believes still in harmony between man, nature, and spirits; benders of the nth generation living in a city not unlike the crown jewel of their heyday hundreds of years ago. A city-state, a preserve if you will, of benders and bender culture; locked away behind a sea of fog and a wall of mountains, protected from the strange world outside of their homeland. This world is new and strange, to all involved. A sickly, weak peace is all that holds the world together now; and the seeds of revolution are once again stirring. What the future brings to this world is anyone's guess; all that can be assured is that humanity stands at the brink of a new age, a new journey, one unlike any taken before.

| The Cities of the World Gihwe Sudo - This city is a world into itself; a walled enclave filled to the brim with technology and a sense of rejection to the outside world. Outsiders are treated as inferior, something to be wary of. The humans that are born and live within the walls of this city spend their entire lives swathed and integrating with the technologies they spend their entire lives developing. Nature has no place here, many of the humans have never seen a living non-human creature; and very few could name the image of one past the generic title of 'bird' or 'mammal'. While considered the central hub of government and 'culture' for the non-bending world; the cities in the outer regions of the world are largely left to run themselves and maintain their own regions. Little to no direction come from the Central Council that, in theory anyway, runs the world. Little by way of exports come from the city as well; the people within hoard their technology and knowledge fiercely; allowing only the outdated and useless knowledge they no longer need to trickle outward. Pukkŭksŏng Guk-ga - How this oddity of the world came to be has long been lost to history. The city of Pukkŭksŏng Guk-ga exists permanently within a veil of night, with only a few days of the year being broken by a dim twilight-state in which the almost forgotten sun reaches a full two degree below the horizon at sea level and allows those that travel to the tops of the strange mountains surrounding the bay and city to see it's lost light. The only natural light is that of the stars and the moon; with lanterns of fire and artificial light lining the roads in and out of the area. Approaching this city from any direction is a treat; the city and surrounding land areas are bathed in a sea of lights that mimics the sky above, while the bordering sea is pitch black with only the scattered spotlights of the ships dancing along. This is the central trade hub of the world; 80% of the world's cargo moves through here on it's journey. Wealth is fairly evenly distributed, as there is enough work on trade and such to keep the people happy. Guójiā Cānglóng - For many generation, Guójiā Cānglóng was a shining jewel of humanity; rich and booming from the masses of ore and minerals ripped from the below the surface of the region. In more recent years, the mines have begun to tap out; leaving the region depressed and almost rotting in a way as the people lose their jobs and move away. The generations of unchecked mining has poisoned the land and turned nature into a dying mass of stunted gray plants and trees. The once colorful facades of the city have flaked off and fallen away; leaving nothing but blackened, soot covered concrete buildings and rusting iron bridges. However, a sense of building energy can be found within certain circles; rumors of a new, untapped mine that could revitalize the region circulate underground; leading to a sort of shadow gold rush, with the jobless and poor running to the empty hills far from the main city in an attempt to find this mine and rise to riches once more. Tiểu bang Đế chế của miền Nam - Another oddity of the world who's origin has been lost to history; Tiểu bang Đế chế của miền Nam exists in a convergence of fog and land that cannot happen anywhere else in the world. Ships that would not be out of place on the southern seas thousands of years ago glide through the air here; the ancient sea form adapted to sail the fog instead of the distant oceans. The sun, moon, and stars are never seen here; in all of recorded history of the region, there has not been a day without the dense fog coverage since the day it first rolled over the lands. At the same time as the fog began covering the lands, rumors and sighting of beasts and spirits exploded; with entire villages disappearing with only the few survivors left to tell the tales of what happened. Humans fled the ancient forests and mountains of the region, converging in the few walled cities and the area's capital for safety. The only means of travel through the region is via the local airships or the strange local animals that are able to traverse the region when tamed as mounts. Shugoryuu no Kuni - The last bastion of spirituality and reverence for the natural world, Shugoryuu no Kuni is a hub of culture and humanism in a world that has turned it's back on such things. Great and mighty temples stand as gleaming reminders of the history of the world that many wish to forget. The people of this place tend to forgo the technological wonders of their neighbors, preferring a simpler life of study and contemplation. The keepers of the world's history reside here, locked away within libraries and monasteries that are rarely, if ever, open to the public. While the humans within this city do not outright reject technology, they prefer to live in harmony with the world, using technology sparingly to maintain the beauty of the land and the health of the people. This is one of the few places in the world where humanity does not fear the legendary benders from the history books; the people raised here still remember the 'truth' of the world, and that humans and benders once lived and worked together in peace and harmony. The highest orders of monks and spiritualists here exhibit strange abilities and powers that are similar to that of the ancient benders; however they are not classified as such; allowing them to live peacefully within their city without worry of being taken away by the 'shadow units' of the military that are tasked with suppressing benders born outside of their hidden city-state. Kaiki no Sato - Hidden deep in unforgiving mountains and swathed by a blanket of mist and fog, this city is a country in and of itself; an island preserving a world long since lost to the people outside of it's walls. This is the world that the Benders have built; a home and a safe place for them to live and die, far away from accusing eyes and vengeful weapons. Not all who call this city home are gifted with the powers of Bending, however all that live here strive to coexist in peace and harmony, just as the world itself did eons ago. While the population of the city and surrounding valley is almost exclusively made up of benders, there are the occasional non-bending humans that reside here. They are almost entirely made up of the children of bending families that did not inherit the ability to control and element, although the odd outsider does appear every so often; usually saved from a shipwreck off the coast or found lost in the mountains and brought in for treatment. Airships ride the currents around the tallest buildings, while ships glide silently over the rivers and lakes of the valley. The main entrance to the city is via a massive cave hidden behind a waterfall nearly a kilometer wide and over 600 meters tall. A special team of earthbenders are stationed at the entrance of the cave; opening and closing a special gate of earth that disguises the cave and underground river as part of the mountainside. The exact location of the waterfall and river are unknown to the outside world; as it exists within the fog sea of the Tiểu bang Đế chế của miền Nam region; the humans of which do not leave their well established travel and trade routes for fear of the beasts and spirits that roam the wilds. | |

| The Three Faces of Humanity The Humans of Gihwe - People of technology and progress, the people are on the precipice of a major change. Evolution has taken hold once again, the merging of technology and biology giving rise to humans that are barely even human in the classical sense of the species. Rejection of nature and a disconnect from the outside world has created an insular culture that sees nothing but the jeweled beauty of their own world, and nothing of the darkness outside. Given a few more centuries on their current path, these people will have passed beyond the understanding of the outer regions; creating the first new sub-species of humanity since the emergence of benders over ten thousand years before. Humans of the Outer Regions - Everything and nothing about humanity in the Outer Regions has changed in the centuries since the Bender disappeared and the old world fell apart. Technology has moved on, religions have risen and fallen; but the people are much the same. They live, laugh, love, work, and die as they have for generation unknown. While the faces are new and different, the sense of community and humanity is still the same. Hidden From the World, The Benders Flourish - Driven to hide in their secluded mountain homeland, the human benders no longer divide themselves according to their elements; choosing now to live in true harmony with each other and the land they call home. Spirits and humans are at peace here; with the benders attaining a level of technology not that far removed from what existed during their golden era centuries ago; which allows them to live long, comfortable lives of relative ease. Because of this, they are able to spend their time communing with nature and enjoying the paradise they have built; never truly forsaking the outside world, but preferring to stay safe with their own kind. | |
