Once, not long ago, such a view would have sent his muse and creativity through the roof, inspired some kind of grand solution for one of the many problems that plagued the grand, shining city. Nowadays all it did was make the young engineer sigh morosely, his slender fingers growing a little sore as he sat and played, dully, watching the glowing, soulless city that he had helped to build, go by beneath him. Eventually, watching the sun set in the sky and plunge the city into darkness, before it lit up like, well, the shining, artificially-lit city that it was, Royce set down his guitar with a sigh, standing as he did so, stretching out his tall, lanky frame, and adjusting his favourite white overcoat on his shoulders, as he made his way to the window to look more closely at the city changing from day to night in perfect synchronisation. The beautiful sight brought nothing but a frown to his pale features as he fished a packet of cigarettes out of his coat's voluminous pockets, bringing it to his lips and lighting it with a click of his shining silver lighter, the engineer sighing in comfort as he stepped to the window and opened it, blowing a puff of smoke out into the still sky, watching it float for a long moment, before, his eyes narrowing, he raised his hand before him, pointing it at the cloud of smoke, and, swirling it in a slow, circular motion, he watched the smoke cloud begin to stir in the still air, swirling slowly, forming a rough sphere of spinning air and smoke, before, glancing around behind him, he let his hand fall, the smoke dissipating into nothing in the cool night air. As intriguing as it was, playing with his powers like this always made Royce feel on edge, knowing that any one of the city's citizens would tear him apart in a heartbeat if they knew what he truly was. The grim thought only deepened the glum engineer's serious frown as he flicked the cigarette out of the window behind him, rubbing his brow with a hand, before an interesting thought crossed his mind, bringing the briefest hint of a smile to his thin lips: A drink or two would definitely help his dark mood, or at the very least, help him to forget the uncaring, cyclical nature of the city and its development, and so, making up his mind, he pulled his heavy jacket in close, deposited his room key into his pocket, and left his modest apartment behind, heading out onto the cool, busy streets of the city at night. Royce Blackburn walked tall, with his slender hands in his pockets and dull eyes gazing straight ahead, chewing subtly on an unlit cigarette clasped gently in his teeth, as he went off in search of something to drink, and, if he was feeling particularly adventurous, the company of others. | |
